Parties for this weekend!

So another weekend is coming up and looks we'll have a great one not just because of the weather but because of the good music paaaarteeeeeies! So here is my weekend music party plan...

Thursday night: Simian Mobile Disco at Highline Ballroom

Friday night: Sub Swara with Glitch Mob at Le Poission Rouge

Saturday night: Matthew Dear at Rebel

Stay tuned for my update!

El Haru Kuroi at Barbes

This bar, Barbes, in Park Slope in Brooklyn always has very interesting and unique musicians playing at the night. I have been there a couple of times to see Slavic Soul Party!, who plays there every Tuesday night. However, the last Tuesday night they had a different set of bands playing. I got there with my friends and as often it goes I was drinking and enjoying conversations with some of the folks at the bar area, which is right next from the room where bands play music. So I totally missed the first band while I was having a good time at the bar until the next band all the sudden got my attention.

The band called, El Haru Kuroi. They were playing something like Bosanova type at the time I went into the room where they were playing at. The music was beautiful and chill, it's like the music you want to listen at week nights and feel your life through it. And they went on to more Mexican, Colombian style of folk music, which were very lively and sweaty yet beautiful. Everybody was dancing and some folks were clapping their hands like Framenco, which totally added great sound of latin ethnic spice.

Anyway, this was a total surprise but it was so greatful that I have encountered this band who played such a soulful modern latin music. It was so easy to feel the music and let myself into the vibe created by the audience in the room.

Even luckier, after they finished their play I got to talk with the singer woman and found out that they were all teachers and go off for the show to play their music when they are off. (What a lucky students at the school!) Also the band name is coming from Japanese word 'Harakuroi', which means that you have something behind you that I don't know when we talk or negotiate, umm, yeah it's not so happy name, kind of dark side.... I don't know who taught them the name, whoever that was, hope that was not the lost in translation.... :)

Anyway, I had a great music at the Tuesday night, and this proved again that this bar, Barbes, knows what they are doing. The vibe is always good, great bar with local hang out feeling with bohemian vibe and good sophistication. I'd love to talk to the people at the bar who are booking these great musicians some time.

Rusko at Studio B

Damn!!! This Rusko's live was one of the best Dub Step shows I've even been to!!

After the BLVD's show at Bowery Ballroom and a few drinks at another bar on that Friday, we headed to Studio B in Brooklyn for a good Dub Step party where Rusko and other dub step DJs were playing.

Here is a list of DJs for the night:
I knew some of the Rusko's songs and really liked them. But I've never seen his show and to be honest I had no idea how he looked or how he would play until the night. But when he came up on the stage with a MC, Rod Azlan, he was carrying a bass. I was like what??? But it turned out that he played his laptops/DJ thing AND actually played bass together on the stage! And he dropped really heavy and thick base dub step sound while he was playing either laptops or bass. His play was such a journey that sometimes he went playing more minimal house or trancy type of sound then he immediately brought us back in heavy duty dub step sound!! And all we could see was his super funky energy exploding on the set and he knew he was teasing and playing with us.

The audience was all dancing so hard and enjoying with the journey with him going back and forth between heavy dubstep and a bit light sounds. His joker kind of looking and the performance was definitely the entertainer. He makes really cool dubstep music and he was playing them at the show. But with his performance, with his playing bass, with his maneuver and the way he created the journey, it brought the show to the next level and earned the best dubstep show I've ever seen.

Man, that's why I love Dubstep so much right now, there are so many different styles and many musicians are trying many different creative things. And I really appreciate the creativity and freestyle! Right now there is no establishment around here, many musicians from different background making what they want with this Dub Step sound. There are a lot of room out there where musicians can do a lot of funky things! Viva la Freedom!

Anyway, Rusko, we got to keep our eyes on this guy!

BLVD & Lotus at Bowery Ballroom

At April 10th Friday evening, my friend from Japan just made all the way from Tokyo right before the show BLVD was going to start at Bowery Ballroom. BLVD is a band I have seen in S.F. and their sound is something like Rock, Hiphop, Electro mix. Their show is always lively and has good drive and groove that gets our ass shaken. This time they were going to play opening up for a main band, Lotus. I like Lotus's sound but not so much that I want to pay for their show, not really my type of music. So this time I purely went for the front act!

And the show turned out to be a lot of fun and good music through out the show. I liked the way they drove the music and audience. It's like when people realized they were already dancing and smiling. Even though the singer guy wearing sun glasses on the stage looked a little cheesy to me, but the performance was great. It's not too crazy, kind of mellow, so it was perfect to start the night yet got good sweat.

Here are some clips from the night....

Midival Punditz

Haven't been able to update the blog though I've been going out to many good music parties. The reason is now my friend from Tokyo has been visiting me and so I've been out every night until last night for the last two weeks or so. Finally I've got a little off this evening and find it as a good timing to update my music life in NYC!

First, I went to S.O.B. to see Midival Punditz for their new CD, 'Hello Hello' release party. They played with Karsh Kale and Vishal Vaid. I've seen them played together at Joe's Pub almost a year ago, but the set at the Joe's Pub was not really fun, everybody had to sit down at the tables and listen to their music as if they were playing classic music or something. Especially being from S.F. that sucked and I was so dissapointed. But this time I knew how the parties at S.O.B. typically go so I expected the Midival Punditz show will be a good one. And it turned out to be a good show. Well, the crowd didn't go crazy, only the people in the front area were dancing, but it was much much better than the one at the Joe's Pub...

The music was beautiful, I really like the combination of the band, Midival Punditz, Karsh Kale, and Vishal Vaid, each of them brings different beautiy of sounds. Karsh Kale's tabla/drum and Vishal Vaid's peaceful and soulful singing definitely adds excitements of live to the sounds by Midival Punditz. Though I danced a lot and enjoyed the music, I have to say two things....

One, the Punditz guys need to be more entertainers! If they're just smiling and staring at their laptop computer all the time we didn't really need them on the stage especially when we had Karsh Kale and Vishal Vaid doing some actions getting attention from audience. It's a show, so I expect them to entartain or show some energy or something otherwise I can listen their music at my house with good stereo speakers.

And two, looks Karsh Kale was having a hard time to adjust a microphone sound level for his tabla and looked being frustrated while communicating with the audio setup folks at upstairs. At the beginning that was ok, but towards the end that was too much and the stress he was carrying and showing through out the show totally turned us off as well. And maybe that's one of the reasons not many people were dancing. Sound check before the show was needed or he should have made it though with what he had ? I don't know, but it was unfortunate that the great music live show couldn't connect with the audience because of such thing....

Overall, I still love their music and again I enjoyed the show. But I'm not sure if I'll go to their next live show if I have to pay.

Four Ted, Dub Step, Mike Relm

I was in San Francisco last week where I used to live for 6 years and went out with my great SF friends. One of the high lights is the last Saturday night when we went out for Four Tet/Jon Hopkins at Mezzanine and later to The Triple Crown for Surefire Sound's dub step party. When we arrived at Mezzanine Four Tet was already planing and we missed Jon Hopkins, which is such a bummer.... Four Tet was ok, nothing really special about. But the thing impressed me was the SF audience. I saw Four Tet/Jon Hopkins a week ago at Museum of National History in NYC and saw only about 20 people out of 500 (or so) were dancing. But at this show at Mezzanine most of people were pumping and dancing. I actually thought the SF crowds would be dancing hard because the electro music in SF is really hot and people in SF love dancing and feeling the music. But it was great to see that was really happening.

After we couldn't get to where we wanted to be at Mezzanine, we moved to The Triple Crown for a dubstep show. Man, this show really kicked our ass so hard and shaked all of our bodies! MC and the dubstepping style was so cool and the DJs were droping from dypical dubstep to crossover style and kept the crowd moving and pumping. I still remember we were all sweaty and screaming and smiling at each other.

So that's my music high light in SF this time until right before I was getting my flight at San Francisco airport. After I was closing my laptop and was about to join a long queue to the gate, when I looked up there was a guy who looked so familiar. And then boom, wow Mike Relm ! He was just standing in front of me. He is one of my current top 5 most interested Producers/DJs so I was so stoked! Of course I started talking to him and he was such a cool guy as expected. We talked about the audience in West coast/East coast, Burning Man, etc till I almost missed my flight! ;-) He'll coming back to NYC for opening up for Dell the Funky Homosapien on 4/29 at BB King, so I'm already looking forward to it.

From SF Chilling March 09

If you don't know who is Mike Relm, check his web site or try this youtube, he's genius!

Lastly, I had a great SF trip thanks to all of my sweet and great friends in SF. Can't wait to go back soon!

Fernando Otero from Argentine

There is a show tonight where Fernando Otero will be playing at Joe's Pub. I actually don't really know about his music, I checked his music at youtube and sounded very acoustic or classic kind of music plus Algentine tango influence. My friend Steven told me about this show so it's got to be good, and I'm always very excited to explore new music & sound. Stay tuned for an update....

Here is an introduction from the Joe's Pub's web site.

-----
SHOW DESCRIPTION
Argentine composer and pianist Fernando Otero found his voice as writer, musician and bandleader when, at the urging of one of his music teachers, he began to incorporate the indigenous sounds of his native Buenos Aires into his work. Twenty years have passed since Otero opened his ears to this wealth of ideas, and ever since he has pursued his vision of X Tango. On his Nonesuch debut "Pagina de Buenos Aires", he does evokes a feeling of Buenos Aires – something you can sense even if you've never been there --through his innovative use of the bandoneon, the accordion-like instrument at the heart of all tango. But the world Otero conjures up is really all his own.

--------------

Usually I don't go to this type of music show especially the one where I need to sit down the whole time. But this one turned out to be a great beautiful music show that kept me feel good. It was great modern Jazz influenced by Argentine tango. It is always nice to explore new music...

Jon Hopkiins Update....

Wow, his new album is due out on May 5th this year and given the show I went two days in row I'll definitely buy more than one! And as a great surprise, he's made one of the songs from the album available for free download! And that is the song that really drove my ass shaking those two nights! The song is Wire, and here is the download link....

Be careful, because this song will shake you up so hard that you want to go out and party! ;-)

Jon Hopkins at Pianos

From Jon Hopkins at Pianos

Since the night before we were so impressed by Jon Hopkins world at One Step Beyond party at American Museum of National History we decided to go to check him again who was playing at Pianos in Lower East. It was only one hour show and the venue was kind of wired place to have his type of music, it was more like rock music live house and other bands before and after were some like that. But again, he dropped his shit again so hard and hit our heart with his beautiful yet powerful sounds and we were just so enjoying the journey of the sounds. At the climax we were all so into it and dancing so hard. It was just so amazing looking at him playing his synthesizer and machines to play and create those sounds lively. Once he finished his play we were all like ok, let's go, we had so much fun..... even though there was more bands after him. But we knew what we wanted. There is only one video clip and one pic from the show. I was so busy dancing and no time to record the video.... :)

Four Tet & Jon Hopkins at Museum of National History!

Wow, they will be playing at American Museum of National History this Friday night, amazing! It's so timely that my friend Steven just told me about the music even happening at the National History museum the other day when we were dancing at another party at Brooklyn museum, and now I've just found that Four Tet and Jon Hopkins will be playing there on this Friday. It's awesome! and it's so cool just to imagine listening and dancing with their music under the huge whale or the dinasour !! (though I don't really know where the music will be...)

Here is a link to the event.

Update:
Wow, what a night.... somehow we thought it was going to be a lot of people at the entrance so we should have been there earlier but when we got there nobody, no entrance people, nothing. I thought it was canceled or something. But exactly at 9pm they opened the door. It was kind of wired because even though the party was presented by this people called Fader but all the people who selling/checking your tickets, coat check, etc are all Museum people.

But once entered inside it was so cool that we were literally walking into the National History Museum looking the Dinosaurs, space planets, etc. The dance floor was in the planetarium area and this was so perfect for the music like the ones from Four Tet, Jon Hopkins. It was super excited walking down to the dance floor looking at all the space and planets sculptures stuff.

Long story short, all the music was absolutely cool and this might be the best show I've ever been to in NYC in terms of the quality of music. The people at the party were many young people and seemed had no idea about the kind of music and didn't know what to do with it. So it's not like the time I use to go to underground parties to see cool music. But still the situation of being under those planets and spacey setup made the ambient so cool. And the very front area, right in front of the performers sets area had many music lovers and it was so fun to dance with them and with the fantastic music.

Four Tet was cool, but this time, Jon Hopkins totally rocked the floor and shaked ass so hard. He started very spacey and trippy sounds which totally went well with the planetarium setup. And he started slowly moving to minimal techno to progressive, and eventually progressive breaks. At the point we were all dancing and jumping and I just couldn't stop smiling and that was not only me...

Jon Hopkins will be playing at Pianos tonight, so I might want to check him out. He was that great... Thanks Jon!!!!

Here are some pictures and clips from the night....

Slavic Soul Party! Tonight....

These guys play east european/gipsy/funk/jazz style of music and they're pretty good. I've seen them once at this bar called, Barbes, and it was such a great live music & dancing. They are actually playing every Tuesday now. Not only the band, I really liked the bar too. Good vibe, good people, and it's like a place where people come not just for drinking, something beyond...

Anyway, I'll be going to the bar to check the music and dance with my friends tonight!

Update:

It's always good music and good vibe at this party. I had a great time and danced with their great music. Also it was so nice to hang out with my great friends surrounded by good music. Surprisingly there were many Japanese, it was fun though!

Evan Mark - Man Behind Bluetech

I've been a bug fan of his music, it's to me a mix of dub, psychedelic, ambient, downtempo, electro, and all of those are mixed so elegantly and beautiful. And his music always maintain some spirituality and very northern california redwood vibe. I'd strongly recommend to listen up these 2 albums, 'Prima Materia' and 'Sines and Singularities' if you haven't known yet and into downtempo, ambient, dub sort of sounds.

Anyway, recently I found this web site that interviews, I believe, electro music scene related folks, called, Fake Science, and I downloaded a couple episodes and was listening them. And one of the episodes was interviewing Evan Mark a.k.a Bluetech! I mean I've never really heard him talking before. It was always me dancing and him playing music or DJing every time I saw him. So to me it's so interesting to know how he gets inspired and make his music. Here is the interview mp3 from the Fake Science site.

The interview was actually done almost a year ago and in the interview basically they're introducing his new music experiment with this released album called 'Emotional Ecology'. And this excitement had totally hit my body this morning once they introduced a sample from the album. It's minimal techno/house, psychedelic, progressive, electro with the spiritual vibe. But it really has an emphasis on minimal techno and psychedelic trance and those are mixed so perfectly and again elegantly. I used to listen psychedelic a lot but not these days, I've been into some other types of music, but always still love some essence of the progressive side of sound, its rhythm and speed. And one of the music types I've been into these days is Minimal Techno. Especially if I can feel the sounds and rhythm are coming from psychedelic background it drives me nuts!

And this new album is jut about what I was hoping Minimal Techno to be and actually it went beyond my imagination! I'm still listening this album (yes, I've already got the album from iTunes!) when I'm typing but I've already totally been into this. Some are Minimal/Psychedelic, some are progressive, some are electro, some are I don't know, it's so experimental and being beyond existing music genre or what so ever. And this is the reason why I like his music and his type of musician. They always try to find a new sound and music, go beyond ordinal boundary and create something new that people have hard time to describe it but the sounds provides us pure excitement and shaking a whole body before I notice it.

Getting our from where they've already establish themselves and could be so comfort, exploring some different worlds and trying understand them with what they have, and transforming them into a new world.

Long story short, this album is definitely a classic and art! I totally appreciate what he has done and accomplished with this album. Since it was released a year ago, so I don't know what he's into these days. But I'll be seeing him dropping a set at Earth Dance at this September, I just can't wait !  I'm sure I'll be just going crazy and nicely shaked by his show.

Gilles Peterson

Gilles Peterson has been my god of music for long years. First time I got into him was almost 10 years ago if not longer. He introduced me so many different kind of music in the world. Acid Jazz, Soul, Funk, Brazilian, Disco, Electro, and so many other music. And he always mix all those different kind of music so naturally together and keep crowds moving their ass ! I love all of his mix CDs and he's just so great.

So last weekend I was at Summer Stage in Central Park for some artists including Jamie Lidel, Janelle MonĂ¡e and Gilles Peterson was doing DJ between the acts. But to me I was there for Gilles Peterson while to many of the crowds he was just djing to keep music going on. So it was not really Gilles Peterson show though me and my friends were totally our ass got shaked. But once we found out that he was going to be playing at Cielo on last Thursday we were like we absolutely go to go, and we did.

It was totally Gilles Peterson night, he was playing so many different kinds of music, D&B, Electro, Soul, Funk, Disco, HipHop, Downtempo, Brazilian, Acid Jazz, oh god I can't even remember how many of those different music he was playing and guiding us through. And of course all the time we were dancing like monkey! I haven't danced that hard for a while. It was totally that experience where you couldn't stop having a big smile on your face and keep moving and jumping around.

There was actually a surprise at the middle, guess what Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest was there middle of the crowd. And we couldn't even notice until Gilles Peterson played one of Q-Tip's song and introduced him. Only NYC! and me being totally a guy from Japan, I had to take a pic with him!

Anyway, the show was totally awesome and pure fun. And I felt lucky just being there to get the vibe of everybody being their for his music and shaking their ass the whole time!

Karsh Kale & Midival Punditz

Last night I went to this show where Karsh Kale & Midival Punditz were playing their set. I have been listening their music
for last 5 years or so and I really love their music. Especially coming from SF Karsh Kale is like local champion but he's really global. And he's only been progressive and innovative on his music. Mixing with Indian music and sound with electro and breakbeats influence. And I just love Midival Punditz music, their indian/breakbeats/electro just hits a right spot of my soul and
get my ass shaking! So last night, two of them got together and were performing, once I knew that was going to be happening, I was totally excited and imagine how the show was turning out to be.

Ok, so their performance was absolutely awesome and the music was so beautiful and mind blowing. And I couldn't stop shake my ass. But the problem was that the venue or the set. So everybody was sitting at their table, some were eating dinner, some were drinking, some were waiting for their waitress to come to their table for orders. But nobody was dancing, NO DANCING!! I was like how that was possible ??? with this awesome music, yes again, their music was electro and little psychedelic breakbeats plus Indian influence, ok but it's absolutely ELECTRO! that kind of music shake your ass and you couldn't stop moving your body to any direction. And here I was with this maybe 100 or 200 people with this awesome music and NO DANCING!!

I couldn't believe that, but bottom line, the performance and the music were totally great. And with Karsh Kale drumming, which I've never seen, I like Karsh Kale even better!

So here are some video from the show.

And one more.

MacBook Air!

Ok, so after thinking going back and forth finally I've bought this new mac ! Yes, that's right, MacBook Air ! Wooow!

I was not sure about the price, the small disk size, and that it doesn't have a DVD/CD drive, but I still could see much more advantage of having this Air. First of all, the weight, it's absolutely light and it's so thin that I can bring it anywhere and even that I can carry along with my company's laptop when I have to travel. And the design, yes, at the end of the day, it's a design. Of course it has to function in a way that I need. But after having two Mac computers I don't have any doubt on the usability compared to PCs. So that's covered.

And there is this $99 DVD/CD drive so when I need it, for example when I want to watch DVDs, then I can just plug it in and that's it, I can enjoy movies on my Air when I'm on Amtrak train to Boston or air planes to San Francisco!

So anyway, I go this new Air today and have been playing around. So far so good. Of course it's just the first day, it has to be good after spending so much money! And one of the reasons I got this Air is to re-start this blog. Ahmm, yep, that's really nothing to do with Air, it's just a matter of my lazyness or persistency problem. But long story short, this is the solution I came up with, so we'll see. Hahaha!
